Rocky Mountain National Park is located in north-central Colorado, just to the west of Estes Park, Colorado. The national park is known for its bighorn sheep, huge herds of elk or wapiti, and its majestic mountains as it sits astride the Continental Divide. Chief among these mountains is its highest, Longs Peak, 14,259 feet above sea level.

Estes Park is a popular resort town, mainly during the summer, though it's also well visited during the other seasons--winter for its snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing, fall for watching the elk rutting season and autumnal colors and spring, well, spring is when life returns to the meadows and the nearby waterfalls break loose from their icy confines.

The Boulderfield
Pause in the morning on this, the final point on the Longs Peak Trail that you can still legitimately call it a trail. From here it's a route, almost a suggestion, hopping from boulder to boulder up to the Keyhole and beyond. Here at the Boulderfield there are sites for backcountry campers and a hitching post for horses.
